the adventures of chickpea" until she raffles off to someone's else's roost

is 23'' by 29''
This picture taken as a "shameless plug of my business" photo may give a bit of realism to the size.
Stay tuned for  future photo's with descriptions of how I made Chick.
Nothing is better than seeing it in person , as it a fiber bird and not a pheasant under glass.
I am quite thankful that in addition to other genetic attributes
I inherited my funny bone from both my mom and dad.
Below is my mom's dammit doll with Chickpea.

I will give the dammit doll to whomever buys the most tickets at one time.

Drawing 12/29/16 Tickets $5

Online link to tickets

Wall quilt raffle to benefit Wildlife Rehabilitation!

“Chick Pea” was designed and sewn by Amanda Whitsel and is based on my resident Coturnix quail, who provides eggs for the opossums.  Her full name is Lady Frida La Placida Nordbrooke of Kensigntonhamshireville-on Hudson, but that wouldn't fit on the back of this colorful, handcrafted piece.  Set in a handmade frame from reclaimed wood, this would brighten anyone's home!  All proceeds go towards rehabilitating orphaned and injured wildlife in Madison County, Georgia.
$5 a ticket or
$20 for 4 tickets
You can buy tickets online: (specify chick pea raffle and supply your address) or by check or cash to Suzie DeGrasse or Amanda Whitsel.
Drawing will be December 29: tickets make a great stocking stuffer

Chickpea is ready to fly!

This quilt started off in my mind's eye as a little yellow chick to raffle for
Suzie, my friend who is a
State and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator
(and generally good human). For Suzie's Facebook page click here
Suzie rescues 'possums, bunnies as well as advice lots and lots of people, via social media, phone, and email.

Recently, Suzie built herself an aviary and I learned that bird rescue is a tricky proposition. When I suggested a yellow chickee she asked
"Could it maybe be more like wild chicks?’’
The name of the real live Chick at Suzie’s is
"Lady Frida La Placida Nordbrooke of Kensingtonhamshire-on Hudson"
That wouldn't fit on the back of the quilt but Susie calls her Chickpea for short. Thank goodness, because that name is bigger than the quilt.
Check back later for details about my raffle for saving wildlife in
Madison County Ga one bird at a time.
$5 a ticket or
$20 for 4 tickets

Shadow Quilts ?

Shadow Quilts ?

Good grief charlie brown , I am going to post again this fine month , god willing and the creek don't rise.

Picture a quilt in this empty frame , careful it might start to be a shadow frame!

A quilt can be framed in so many ways so for the sake of brevity, giggle giggle giggle  I will try and stick to just 2.
If your goal is to save a thick quilt my advice is to use a shadow frame. Thinner quilts can work in both , it's totally up to the framer.

Harry Dogs and Harry Potter : both make me happy

Harry Dogs and Harry Potter : both make me happy said Amanda . Proof :

Harry Potter needs no picture , correct ?

lets talk a wee bit more about other ways to think about the hairy.

the lovely girl in the photo above is named ? and she makes enough hair to be almost an honorary hairy bulldog.

So to end here,as I need to , could hairy belle ever be red ?

Piece and Peace

Happy July 17th 2016

I almost met Carrie Bloomston in 2015 but her devotion to summers off with her kids kept her from coming to Atlanta/Athens to promote her book A Little Spark. This week Carrie blogged about Amy Butler's new book Piece Keeping and the Blog Tour that Carrie participated in by creating the project she is modeling below.

The rest of the Blog Tour participants work can be seen by clicking on the words Amy Butler

Some quilting at the farm and at Judy's and some of the 2016 cow crop are pictured below.

Calving started March 18

Michelle's Quilt

Sunday, Fresh from the Farm

Shocking how difficult it is to get all the planets aligned and post a video here.
Shocking that Facebook now has a "live feature"
Look out world pocket dialing just took on new meaning.

A week in the month of june give or take a day or 2

I am happy that my ad in Flagpole magazine was answered by lovely Emily (left) . Emily and Ginni had 3 days of class at Crooked Pine Quilts in June. Ginni  completed her 2nd quilt's center panel and Emily is turning this 4 patch into her 1st quilt. I now offer house calls to set up a permanent sewing area in homes as making a small area devoted to one's art is key.

Everyone has a quilt story!

I love that more often that not , when  I engage in conversation, most likely I will get to hear a quilt story. Some watched a much loved family member making a quilt. Others started a quilt in college or when a baby was on the way. I have made a lot of quilts , given them away , sold some , and finished some for both other quilters and just regular folk that want to save a family heirloom.
Someday, I hope to meet the artist named Carrie Bloomston . Her vision of telling one's story is one I embrace and am determined to share with one and all. Every person has a story and most story's have a quilt in them , if not as leading lady than as a very important extra. If you love quilts and live around Danielsville Ga ( a suburb , giggle, of Athens, Ga. ) bring a quilt or just come and look. I plan to be sewing , on a quilt of course.
Sew Something y'all !!!

Three dimensional quilting , rather a misnomer.

As I wrote that title , I thought, huh?
The definition of a quilt is 3 layers of fabric, bound by stitching through all 3 layers.
Hopefully, the maker will see the wisdom in finishing the edges.
All finished quilts are 3-d but just like a most words in the English language,
 3-d can mean many things.
In this case , I mean adding dimensionality with another layer of fabric.

I am teaching a class at City Square Quilts in Hoschton (  pronounced  H-shh-ton ) Ga.
on February 11th 2016 at 10 am.

10 Minute Quilt Blocks by Suzanne McNiel
Below is my sample.

The book is available for purchase at City Square Quilts.

There are a lot U tube videos of Ms. McNiel making these quilts , they are wonderful , you never need to buy her book. Wait , what ?
The  book is worth it if you want to make larger quilts and don't want to figure out how much fabric to buy . Lots of folks  believe Cratsy and U-tube are all anyone needs to learn a craft and they are great. There is so substitute for a hands on class.
I have played with and somewhat mastered the technique which has been around for a long time. I have seen it called everything from  3 dimensional Bow-ties to  Cathedral Windows.
